SHORT HISTORY OF MEETING

By 1679, two quarterly meetings had been established for Friends in Maryland, one for each of the eastern and western shores. The Quarterly Meeting for the Eastern Shore was under Baltimore Yearly Meeting until its meetings were joined to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

Southern Quarterly Meeting was established in 1789 by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. It included the meetings in Delaware and those on the Eastern Shore of Maryland which had previously been part of Baltimore Yearly Meeting. The first business sessions of this quarter were held in 1790.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) discontinued Southern Quarterly Meeting in 1828. Southern Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite) became Southern Half-Yearly Meeting in 1905. In 1987 this meeting began to meet again on a quarterly basis. It is currently active.
