Evesham Monthly Meeting was established in 1760 by Salem Quarterly Meeting out of Haddonfield Monthly Meeting. The monthly meeting was transferred to Haddonfield Quarterly Meeting in 1794. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches.

Evesham Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) was discontinued in 1884; its members were transferred to Chester Monthly Meeting (NJ) and Medford Monthly Meeting (Hicksite).

The Orthodox monthly meeting merged into Moorestown Monthly Meeting in 1956.

 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RECORDS

Records of the Hicksite and Orthodox monthly meetings and their predecessor, the pre-Separation meeting, 1682-1956. Includes: Hicksite men's minutes, 1827-1884, and pre-Separation/Orthodox men's and joint minutes, 1908-1956; women's minutes, 1828-1884 (Hicksite) and 1812-1908 (pre- and Orthodox); vital records of both branches, 1682-1884 and 1956; minutes of Ministers and Elders, 1762-1800 (pre-), 1828-1884 (Hicksite), and 1840-1884 (Orthodox); and other miscellaneous materials, including a Poor Committee account book, 1790-1866, manumissions, 1776-1787, and a list of Sufferings, 1776-1828.

Monthly meeting records normally include minutes of men’s and women’s meetings for business and registers of births, deaths, marriages, removals (transfers), and disownments. In general, non-members are not mentioned in the minutes, even when they attended meeting for worship on a regular basis.

Vital Records

At the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1827-28, pre-Separation vital records were generally retained by the branch with which the recorder was affiliated. Researchers are advised to consider vital records which span this period carefully: in many cases, the meeting without the original records may have reconstructed these records for its membership only, giving the impression that individuals in the other branch were never members.

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.
