Concord Monthly Meeting was established in 1684 by Chester [Concord] Quarterly Meeting. The monthly meeting circulated between Concord and Chichester until 1729; before this date the meeting was known as "Chichester". At the time of the Separation, Concord Monthly Meeting divided into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. The two branches began to hold their business meetings jointly in 1932, and in 1937, merged to form a united meeting under the two Concord Quarterly Meetings. Concord is currently an active monthly meeting.

 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RECORDS

Pre-Separation, Hicksite, Orthodox and United records include: Minutes since 1684; vital records since 1679; women's meeting minutes, 1715-1902; property records; financial records and miscellaneous papers, 1776-1801.

Monthly meeting records normally include minutes of men’s and women’s meetings for business and registers of births, deaths, marriages, removals (transfers), and disownments. In general, non-members are not mentioned in the minutes, even when they attended meeting for worship on a regular basis.

Vital Records

At the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1827-28, pre-Separation vital records were generally retained by the branch with which the recorder was affiliated. Researchers are advised to consider vital records which span this period carefully: in many cases, the meeting without the original records may have reconstructed these records for its membership only, giving the impression that individuals in the other branch were never members.

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.

Included are: Minutes of the pre-Separation men's meeting, 1684-1827; minutes of the Hicksite men's meeting and later, of joint sessions with women, 1827-1932; minutes of joint business sessions with the Orthodox monthly meeting, 1932-1937; minutes of the united monthly meeting, 1937-1984; separate indexes: 1684-1757, 1684-1803, 1803-1828, and 1935-1954. Vol. 1908-34 includes earlier women's minutes, 1859-1877. Men and women met jointly for business in 5mo24 1877. Vol. 1684-1757 contains births, 1680-1726.

Ministry and Counsel committees were established in 1918 by Hicksite meetings, which no longer designated members as ministers or elders.
