A preparative meeting at Chester was established in 12mo, 1698/9. At the time of the Hicksite Separation of 1827, this meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches.

In 1934, Chester Preparative Meeting (Hicksite) became the new Chester Monthly Meeting at the dissolution of the original Chester Monthly Meeting (Hicksite).

In 1948, Chester Preparative Meeting (Orthodox) became Twenty-Fourth Street Monthly Meeting and immediately merged with Chester Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) to form Chester United Monthly Meeting of Friends.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RECORDS

Records of the pre-Separation preparative meeting include: rough minutes, 1783-1784 & 1786-1788; subscription book for the support of the poor, 1769-1799; account books, 1785-1788 & 1807-1814. Records of the Hicksite meeting include: Minutes, 1827-1928; women's minutes, 1828-1876; membership lists, 1840-1902; rough minutes, 1887-1909; treasurer's book, 1892-1934; graveyard treasurer's book, 1878-1919. Records of the Orthodox meeting include: Minutes of the men's meeting and later, of joint sessions with women, 1861-1948; women's minutes, 1834-1916; deeds and other property records, 1886-1937; miscellaneous papers, 1916-1948.

Men's Meeting and Joint

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.
