Burlington Quarterly Meeting was established by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1682. Two Burlington Quarterly Meetings were established in 1827, at the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

In 1898, Burlington Quarterly Meeting (Orthodox) merged with Bucks Quarterly Meeting (Orthodox) to form Burlington and Bucks Quarterly Meeting. In 1955,Burlington Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite) merged with Burlington and Bucks Quarterly Meeting (Orthodox). The meetings in New Jersey were then transferred to the reunited Burlington Quarterly Meeting, and the Pennsylvania Meetings to Bucks Quarterly Meeting.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RECORDS

Records of the Hicksite Burlington Quarterly Meeting include: minutes of the men's and joint meetings, 1827-1917; minutes of the women's meeting, 1827-1889; minutes of the Ministers and Elders meeting, 1841-1941; financial records; and miscellaneous papers, including membership lists, queries received and other records. Records of the Orthodox Burlington Quarterly Meeting include: minutes of the men’s and joint meetings, 1686-1983; women’s meeting minutes, 1686-1921; minutes of the Ministers and Elders meeting, 1717-1970; financial records, 1731-1986; and miscellaneous papers.

Men's Meeting and Joint

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.

Ministry and Counsel committees were established in 1918 by Hicksite meetings, which no longer designated members as ministers or elders.
