Burlington Monthly Meeting was established in 1678. It became part of Burlington Quarterly Meeting in 1682. At the time of the Hicksite Separation of 1827, the meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches.

The Orthodox branch of this meeting was the forerunner of the Burlington Monthly Meeting which met at Hight Street in Burlington; this monthly meeting was laid down in May of 1991.

Burlington Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) moved all its business sessions to Rancocas in 1907. It reunited with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1955 and changed its name to "Rancocas Monthly Meeting" in 1959. Rancocas is currently an active monthly meeting.

The Hicksite records include: minutes, 1828-1965; vital records, 1675-1956; women's minutes, 1828-1885; ministers and elders' minutes, 1871-1907; account books and other financial records, 1828-1953; miscellaneous papers, 1842-1871.

Monthly meeting records normally include minutes of men’s and women’s meetings for business and registers of births, deaths, marriages, removals (transfers), and disownments. In general, non-members are not mentioned in the minutes, even when they attended meeting for worship on a regular basis.

Vital Records

At the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1827-28, pre-Separation vital records were generally retained by the branch with which the recorder was affiliated. Researchers are advised to consider vital records which span this period carefully: in many cases, the meeting without the original records may have reconstructed these records for its membership only, giving the impression that individuals in the other branch were never members.

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.
