SHORT HISTORY OF MEETING

A meeting for worship at Alloways Creek was established in 1679 under Salem Monthly Meeting. A preparative meeting was established by 1745. In 1783, these meetings were transferred to Greenwich Monthly Meeting. After the Hicksite Separation of 1827, two preparative meetings emerged.

The Orthodox preparative meeting and meeting for worship were discontinued in 1828 by Salem Quarterly Meeting; the members were transferred to Greenwich Preparative Meeting (Orthodox).

By 1932, the Hicksite preparative meeting and	meeting for worship were not held on a regular basis. The meeting for worship was discontinued in 1950; the preparative meeting was discontinued in 1951.

This meeting is often referred to as "Hancock's Bridge".

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting.
