Abington Monthly Meeting was established in 1683 by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting as a monthly meeting for the meetings for worship at Tacony (Frankford) and Poetquesink or Poquessing (Byberry). From 1687 to 1710, this meeting was known as "Dublin". It was transferred to Abington Quarterly Meeting in 1786. At the time of the Hicksite Separation of 1827, two branches of this monthly meeting emerged. The Orthodox branch removed to Cheltenham in 1920 and was renamed "Cheltenham Monthly Meeting" in 1944. Cheltenham is currently an active monthly meeting. The Hicksite monthly meeting, which reunited with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox)in 1955, is the forerunner of the current Abington Monthly Meeting.

 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RECORDS

Records of Abington Monthly Meeting and its predecessors, the pre-Separation and Hicksite monthly meetings, since 1670. Included are: minutes of the men's meeting and later, of joint sessions with women; minutes of the women's meeting; registers of births and deaths; marriage and membership records; certificates of removal, disownments, etc.; epistles received and other miscellaneous papers. Records of the Orthodox Abington Monthly Meeting include: membership, 1827-1886; removals, 1828-1921; minutes, 1827-1953; women’s minutes, 1827-1903; minutes of the ministers and elders' meeting, 1713-1875; account books, 1830-1908.

Monthly meeting records normally include minutes of men’s and women’s meetings for business and registers of births, deaths, marriages, removals (transfers), and disownments. In general, non-members are not mentioned in the minutes, even when they attended meeting for worship on a regular basis.

Vital Records

At the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1827-28, pre-Separation vital records were generally retained by the branch with which the recorder was affiliated. Researchers are advised to consider vital records which span this period carefully: in many cases, the meeting without the original records may have reconstructed these records for its membership only, giving the impression that individuals in the other branch were never members.

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.
