SHORT HISTORY OF COMMITTEE

Like the Hicksite Young Friends Movement, the Orthodox Young Friends Committee was a predecessor group to the Joint Young Friends Movement.

The Committee Organized around a series of informal conferences of young Friends beginning in 1912. Talk of an official formation of a Young Friends Committee was begun in 1915 by Henry Cadbury. By 1925, PYM(O) recognized the group, its mission being "to bring the young Friends together in some closer fellowship and to serve a sort of clearing house for service projects."

In 1930, 25 years before the two branches reunited, the Committee merged with its Hicksite counterpart and formed the Young Friends Movement (Joint). That group continued until 1975, at which point it merged with the Religious Education Committee of PYM.
