SHORT HISTORY OF COMMITTEE
The Education Committee of PYM (formerly known as the Committee on Education) is responsible for "renewal, guidance and support to the services and projects which directly concern the religious and academic education of young people and adults and those who serve them within the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends." In this capacity, the Education Committee nurtures strong relationships with PYM-area Friends, Independent and Public schools, as well as the state and local government, and is charged with representation/defense of the goals of Quaker education to each.
To this end, the Committee supports programs for teachers, religious education, nonviolence, parent education, curriculum and publications, tuition aid, Friends Schools, financial stewardship and Quaker pilgrimage.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RECORDS
Records of Education Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Delaware County, PA), 1833-1983, are physically divided into two large collections, one covering materials 1833-1956 (on the shelf) and one 1948-1983 (in Lockwood Annex). While the latter is strictly comprised of Orthodox Branch materials, the former includes some Hicksite materials and is house in part at Friends Historical Library.
Records 1833-1956 include the Main Committee's Minutes (Hicksite: 1833-1948 and Orthodox: 1843-1921, as well as the minutes of its Advisory Committee (1880-1888), Executive Committee (1873-1950), Field Committee (1938-1943), Finance Committee (1874-1877), Libraries Committee (1896-1903), Mary Jeannes Loan Committee (1897-1939), Superintendant's Advisory Sub-Committee (1907-1908) and Visiting Committee on Schools (1873-1874).
The collection 1948-1983 includes the administrative, financial and public records of the group. A large part of the collection is made up of the Correspondence of the Committee, its subcommittees and separate project groups, most notably those of its Chairman, Robert W. Cope. The Friends Center Corporation Management Committee, the Council for Educational Priorities, the Chace Fund Committee and Shoemaker Fund Committee are among the many semi-independent groups also represented among these records of the Education Committee. The collection chronicles the Committee's involvement with independent schools and the School District of Philadelphia.
