Kudos to the Amazing Canaday Inventory Crew!

InventoryTea2.jpg

Did you know that Canaday student workers have been taking an inventory of all BMC library books?  Well they have, and it might even be a little bit fun!

They're checking to see that the books are on the shelves where they're supposed to be, and that there aren't any problems with a book's catalog record that would make it difficult to find.

It's a big job, and nearly 350,000 books have been inventoried so far!  Great job guys!!

Magill Open House Contest Winners

Here are the winners of the 2007 Magill Open House contests.  Thanks to all who entered!

Heather Harden and Karen Katz came closest to guessing the number of sheets printed using the library's printers last year at 1,180,389.

The winners of the Bach and Beethoven Composer Bobbleheads are David Lopez and Jenny Zhu.

The grand prize winner of the 1933 Map reproduction was Serena Schwartz, who answered all ten questions correctly.

The original map was commissioned for Haverford's centennial in 1933 and includes amusing incidents using cartoon-like figures alongside historical buildings and famous Haverfordians. This copy was hand-painted, which adds amazingly bright and fresh detail to the scenes. You can view the map online here.

The freshmen's mission, if they chose to accept it, was to answer ten questions about Haverlore, related to the map and other historical events on campus.  Even if you're not a freshman, you can test your Haverford IQ by trying the questionnaire yourself (check the answers).

Peruse the brochure for a view of the night's activities.

Stinkbugs!

Exterminators beware!  The Bryn Mawr College library staff don't believe in killing bugs.

Recently, a family of stinkbugs (Brochymenas) came to live in the Canaday staff lounge. Rather than killing them, a nature-loving librarian gathered them up, put them in a jar, took them outside, and let them go free!

If you know the identity of this humanitarian staff member, post a comment!

Canaday Patrons' Penny Jar Donations!

Thanks so much to everyone who's tossed their spare change into the Canaday Patrons' Penny Jar, located just inside the main entrance of Canaday Library!

This year, $40.00 in donations went to purchase goats for families in Malawi via The Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance.

Last year, $40.00 in donations went to Philadelphia's Bread & Roses Community Fund.

Over the years, the penny jar has collected over $1100.00 in $35-40 increments.  This money  has been donated to local, national, and international organizations including Manna, Trinity Center for Urban Life Winter Shelter, South-Indian Women's Self-Help Association, a Costa Rican children's sports center, and many others.

Thanks for your continued thoughtfulness and support of this Bryn Mawr mini-tradition!

Annual library book sale is fantastic success

Swarthmore College Library's annual book sale was a fantastic success this year.  The library raised almost $2000 - the most ever! - which will help support library events and exhibits, as well as support our sister library, the Southern University of New Orleans.  Kudos to student organizers, lead by Kathy Humani, and librarians Pam Harris and Meg Spencer, who helped to make this much-loved family weekend tradition such a success.  Thanks also to everyone who donated books, and to everyone who stopped by the booksale to find bargains and one-of-a-kind treasures.

Kudos to Swarthmore's Rick Vallely

Richard Vallely '75 was awarded the 2005 Ralph Bunche Award from the American Political Science Association for his book "The Two Reconstructions: The Struggle for Black Enfranchisement". The award is for the best scholarly work in political science, published in 2004, which explores the phenomenon of ethnic and cultural pluralism.

Congratulations Professor Vallely!
