On Monday (11/16), a campus-wide meeting about the textbook dilemma.          <title>George Saunders to read at BMC</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img hspace="5" height="230" border="0" align="left" width="344" src="http://news.bascom1.brynmawr.edu/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/saunders.jpg" />MacArthur &ldquo;genius&rdquo; fellow and frequent <em>New Yorker</em> contributor <strong>George Saunders</strong> will read from his work at <strong>7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, in&nbsp; Ely Room at the Wyndham Alumnae House </strong>as part of the&nbsp; <a href="http://www.brynmawr.edu/calendar/visiting_writers.shtml">Creative Writing Program Reading Series</a>. </p><p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;In addition to The New Yorker, Saunders&rsquo; work regularly appears in <em>Harper&rsquo;s</em> , <em>McSweeney&rsquo;s</em>, and<em> GQ</em>.</p><p>&nbsp;</p> <p>His short story collection, <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2922533~S10"><em>In Persuasion Nation</em></a>, was a finalist for the 2007 The Story Prize. His other books and collections include <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2491384~S10"><em>CivilWarLand in Bad Decline</em></a>, <em>Pastoralia,</em> and <em>The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip</em>.</p><p>&nbsp;</p> <p>His latest book, 2007&rsquo;s<a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b3430903~S10"> <em>The Braindead Megaphone</em></a>, was called &ldquo;a Mark Twain-syle shot in the arm for Americans, an antidote to the dumbing-down virus plaguing our country,&rdquo; by <em>Vanity Fair</em>.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Ikebana Exhibit at Magill Library - October 23 through 25</title>
         <description><![CDATA[      <p>The Main Line Sogetsu Study Group will hold its annual exhibit of ikebana floral arrangements at the Haverford College Library on Oct. 23 to 25 throughout the main tier of Magill.&nbsp;</p>         <p>&nbsp;</p>         <p><img width="300" vspace="0" hspace="10" height="225" border="0" align="right" title="IMG_ikebana20093.jpg" alt="IMG_ikebana20093.jpg" src="http://trilogy.brynmawr.edu/mt/trinews/IMG_ikebana20093.jpg" />Ikebana is a formal style of flower arrangement art dating back to medieval Japan.&nbsp; The Sogetsu school emerged in the 20th century and incorporates modern style elements.&nbsp; For this special campus exhibit, designs will focus on incorporating Trifoliate Orange (aka Hardy Orange) in the arrangements.&nbsp; The displays will be of interest to students of Japanese art and culture.&nbsp; </p>         <p>&nbsp;</p>         <p>The exhibit is open to the public during regular library hours.          <title>Suzan-Lori Parks to Read at BMC</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img hspace="10" height="354" border="0" align="left" width="291" src="http://news.bascom1.brynmawr.edu/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/parks.jpg" />Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright<strong> Suzan-Lori Parks</strong> will perform her work at <strong>7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, in Bryn Mawr College&rsquo;s Goodhart Theater</strong> as part of the 2009-10 <a href="http://www.brynmawr.edu/calendar/visiting_writers.shtml">Creative Writing Program Reading Series</a>. </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Creative Writing Program&rsquo;s Reading Series is free and open to the public.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>  <p>Named one of TIME magazine&rsquo;s &ldquo;100 Innovators for the Next New Wave,&rdquo; Suzan-Lori Parks is one of the most exciting and acclaimed playwrights in American drama today. She is the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for the Broadway hit <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2575568~S10"><em>Topdog/Underdog</em></a> and is a MacArthur &ldquo;genius&rdquo; award recipient.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p> In addition to <em>Topdog/Underdog</em>, Parks&rsquo; plays include <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2585476~S10"><em>In the Blood</em>, <em>Venus</em></a> (a 1996 OBIE Award winner), <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2179937~S10"><em>The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World</em></a>, <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2585477~S10"><em>Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom</em></a> (the 1990 OBIE Award winner for Best New American Play), and <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2623604~S10"><em>The America Play</em></a>. </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Parks&rsquo; screenplays include <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2646547~S10"><em>Girl 6</em> </a>and <a target="_blank" href="http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b3401497~S10"><em>The Great Debaters</em></a>.
