I've noticed that a lot of the DVDs I've borrowed from Swat are dirty, and most of them are scratched, some to the point that it's hard to watch parts of them. One of those machines that cleans and repairs CDs and DVDs (the big kind they have at video stores) might be a worthwhile investment at some point.

Hi Aimee - A lot of our DVDs are dirty, you're right. When a patron lets us know that a DVD is scratched, we'll clean it, but unfortunately, we have so many DVDs right now, and only one little cleaner, that it's impossible for us to clean them all. The more industrial kind is a great idea though - I'll look into it! Thanks!

Hey my English class finished reading Macbeth a couple weeks ago, but I've just recently came across this "modern" cinematic version of the play: http://www.amazon.com/Macbeth-Gary-Sweet/dp/B000SIWH0U/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1203725435&sr=8-1
We should add this to our collection!

Can we get "PACKAGE DESIGN IN JAPAN BIENNIAL" every year? We have an older edition currently...but I think that it would be amazing if we got each edition starting now because they are great resources for the Japanese Visual Culture class! Also, it's just a lot of fun to flip through them...

BTF - Thanks for the suggestion! I'll see if we can add it to the collection.

JVCF - It does seem like we only have vol. 8, from 1999. I'll talk to the bibliographers about adding more recent volumes!

The tripod does not have a very wide selection of African movies. Most of those we have are old movies that are not apt portrayals of Africa now.
Considering that the movie industry in Africa is presently booming, I wish to suggest that we increase our collection. Thanks!

Debbie - Great suggestion! I'll pass this along to our bibliographers. Are there any titles you'd recommend?

Can we have Oreos everyday? And maybe refill bucket at at midnight.
Kate said on February 29, 2008 11:13 AM:[link to this]
Shine - Coffee and snacks are courtesy of Dining Services, so we leave it to their judgment about what and how much is available. I'll certainly pass your suggestion along to them though!

MTV made a modern musical version of Wuthering Heights (directed by Suri Krishnamma) that I think would make a really fun addition to the movie collection.

Ali - Great suggestion! I'll look into ordering it!

3. The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections by Amanda Blake Soule
4. magazine: ReadyMade (I would Love o see this at the library!)
5. magazine: Altered Couture
Thanks!

Interesting thing I just noticed--I'm using Tripod to browse the list of today's new books, and there are a bunch on the Middle East. They're all listed under "Asia". Out of curiosity, are these books categorized as being about Asia anywhere else, and is there a reason there isn't a "Middle East" category categoycc
Aimee said on April 29, 2008 3:51 PM:[link to this]
Sorry, it cut me off and went screwy there--I was wondering if there's a reason there isn't a Middle East category, or if that's just one of the many ideosyncracies of Tripod.
Kate Carter said on April 29, 2008 4:58 PM:[link to this]
Aimee - That's a great question - thanks for bringing it up! I'll propose that we create a new Middle East section in the new books list, to compliment the Middle Eastern Studies page on the Subject Portal. In the meantime though, here's why those three titles related to the Middle East are showing up in the Asia section of the New Books List (and the History section)...
The New
Books List displays items in these groups based on their call numbers. For some subjects, like Sociology, this can be fairly complex, with items pulling from a number of different call numbers and even very specific subsets of those call numbers. For others, like History, it's more straightforward, as those items tend to start with D, E, and F. So to create a group for the Middle East on the New Books List, we just have to find the related call numbers and add them to our database.
The books you mention are all technically properly cataloged as DS, which is the history of Asia. Then within DS they are broken down further to their country, topic, etc.
A history of Palestine: From the Ottoman conquest to the founding of the state of Israel
DS125 .K7313 2008
DS101-151 = Israel (Palestine). The Jews
DS114-128.2 = History
Mirror of the Arab world: Lebanon in conflict
DS87 .M282 2008
DS80-90 = Lebanon (Phenicia)
DS80.7 - 87.6 = History
The much too promised land: America's elusive search for Arab-Israeli peace
DS119.7 .M4947 2008
DS101-151 = Israel (Palestine). The Jews
DS114-128.2 = History
So it's not really an idiosyncracy in Tripod, more just a two different factors that lead to the current display. (And I didn't know all that call number stuff off the top of my head either - I had to consult the 388 page manual on cataloging DS to DX!)

Hey I've heard great reviews about "Election". I'm enrolled in the HK cinema class next semester and I would like to check this out even if it's not on the syllabus. Can we add this to the collection?

Once upon a time, there were a few Macs in Canaday and Carpenter. I know there were sometimes technical problems with them. However, Apple computers are increasingly popular at Bryn Mawr. More students know how to use Mac OS and seem to prefer it; could this be kept in mind during the next library computer upgrade?
Thanks!

Canaday's collection of theater-related books is really great, but I'd love to see even more. Can we look into getting The Complete Plays of Sarah Kane?
Also, there's a really wonderful play called Frozen by Bryony Lavery. There's not a copy anywhere in the tri-co and it'd be nice to have.

Canaday --
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a wonderful series... and I love being able to point out places I've been or catch Philly cultural references. Bryn Mawr, please continue collecting this series in the future!
