Want an old computer? Need a new computer?

This Fall Information Services will offer a pilot service selling  four-year old computers for $80. A limited number of machines will be available this year and will be distributed early in the Fall semester, once we find out how many machines are available. First priority will go to community members with a work-related need for a home computer or those who currently have no computer at home.

To express interest, please send an email to help@brynmawr.edu with your
name, Mac or PC preference and information about your home need.

Or Buy New for Less!
You may not know that all members of the Bryn Mawr community are
eligible to purchase Dell and Apple computers, and Microsoft software
at an educational discount. Visit
http://www.brynmawr.edu/computing/docs/sales.shtml to learn more.

Information Services Technology Planning

Information Services has begun a planning process to help determine choices and future directions for IT services, such as email, calendar, file storage and printing. This process will look at our services holistically and lay a foundation for an environment that  better meets the needs of the community. Please take a look at our new blog where we would like to hear from you!

Please answer a few questions we have for community members by posting a comment. Visit our blog at http://www.brynmawr.edu/is/planning/.

Daylight Savings Time is almost here!

I am thrilled that daylight savings time (dst) is starting early this year. It is so much more pleasant to arrive home after a long day with a few hours of sunlight left. Although I see all the advantage of the change, computer systems may be confused by it. The wonderful folks at the Help Desk and in Desktop Support Services have teamed up to write this handy little FAQ about how daylight savings time might affect your computer. Please give it a quick read to make sure you will experience as little inconvenience, and thus enjoy the longer day, as possible.

Ready for Halloween?

It's October! Which means the leaves on Merion Green are changing, the days are getting cooler and there is plenty of apple cider to drink! But what is really exciting is that it is also time for the 7th annual Guild Halloween Open House. Just like last year we will have it on the same day as the dorm trick or treating, Tuesday, October 31st from 3-5PM.

We look forward to seeing you and your family and office mates dressed up and enjoying the games and creative cuisine that we love to create! To get you in the mood for creepy crawly fun, check out these few websites (on your break of course)!

Welcome!

The old BIT that you knew and loved and came to depend upon for the latest news from Computing Services, has now evolved into a blog!  This way we can announce new services, get feedback from you on our ideas, and share our favorite tips & tricks with each other.

To start, we have created a few categories that may help you find what you are looking for and encourage you to subscribe to this blog so you know the instant we publish something new.  We have also provided a few links on the right that will point you to other Bryn Mawr websites and blogs that we're sure will prove useful resources.  Please make comments to this post for features you would like to see and topics that we should cover.

Thanks for reading!  We look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions for this publication as it continues to grow and respond to the needs of the Bryn Mawr College computing community.

Too many printouts!

Canaday printoutsWe are up to our eyeballs in wasted paper!

At the beginning of each semester the library and computing staff expect to stock up on paper for students to print out their readings for the term.  We also put the readings on reserve and scan them into Blackboard, so we know how much there is to read!

Unfortunately each library has a similar stack to the picture taken in Canaday on September 28 (thanks Maria!) and Guild's is even larger!

Here are a few tips to saving trees this fall:

  • print double-sided
  • only print required readings at first, then print the recommended readings as you need them
  • make sure you have the time to wait if you are printing a long article (some articles can take 20 minutes to print if there are images or charts!)
  • make sure the article fits your needs before you print
If you have other ideas for ways to reduce the stacks of unwanted paper littering the public computer labs on campus, please make a comment!

Novell accounts for all!

This fall public computer access has changed. The “generic” logins used in the libraries and other public spaces will continue to provide Internet access, but use of College printing and storage resources will require use of a Novell login or a guest account available from the Help Desk. Students now have their own accounts and are encouraged to use them in the public labs.

What is the Message Center?

The Message Center filters all incoming email for spam and virus-infected messages. Legitimate messages are delivered to your inbox as usual, but unwanted and potentially harmful messages are diverted and quarantined at your Message Center.

You can visit your Message Center to review and retrieve quarantined messages by logging in using Firefox, Internet Explorer, or any standard browser. In any web browser (i.e., Firefox or Internet Explorer), go to https://spamcheck.brynmawr.edu and log in using your Bryn Mawr College email address and password.

You will also receive a weekly quarantine summary email that lists recently quarantined messages and includes a convenient link to the Message Center. Messages that are left in the Message Center will be deleted after 14 days.

For more information, please see http://www.brynmawr.edu/computing/docs/spamfilter.shtml
