Provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, this site is an excellent source for population, housing, economic and geographic data.
TIGER Files
TIGER is the name for the system and digital database developed by the U.S. Census Bureau. The files are a digital database of geographic features, such as roads, railroads, rivers, lakes, legal boundaries and census statistical boundaries. These files can be used to produce maps ranging in detail from a neighborhood street map to a map of the United States.
National Atlas
Create maps based on geospatial and geostatistical data collected for the United States. The site also allows users to download raw data for personal map making needs.

BASINS: Water Quality Tools & Models
BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating Point & Nonpoint Sources) is "a multi-purpose environmental analysis system that integrates a geographical information system (GIS), national watershed data, and state-of-the-art environmental assessment and modeling tools into one convenient package."
Digital Library for Earth Systems Education
The DLESE is a "distributed community effort involving educators, students, and scientists working together to improve the quality, quantity, and efficiency of teaching and learning about the Earth system at all levels." The web site offers access to Earth data sets and much more including educational resources and support services.
National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC):
Source of GIS data for Shoreline and Coastal data. Also provides access to Marine Geology and Geophysics resources.
USGS Water Resources of the United States
