Provides citations to approximately 99 percent of all American dissertations accepted at an accredited institution since 1861, when U.S. academic doctoral degrees were first granted. Masters theses selectively included since 1962. Includes abstracts for doctoral dissertations published since July 1980. Some Canadian dissertations and an increasing number of papers accepted in institutions abroad are also included. Professional (M.D., LL.D.)and honorary degrees not included. Covers 1861-present.

The members of ISSI share an interest in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes related to the self-system. These include the ability for humans (and other animals, to varying degrees) to think consciously about themselves, to form images and concepts of what they are like, to evaluate their characteristics and capabilities, to plan deliberately for the future, to worry about how they are being perceived by others, and to direct their own behavior in line with personal standards. Because this ability to self-reflect has important implications for understanding behavior, the self has emerged as a central focus of theory and research in many domains of social and behavioral science.
