Encyclopedias:

Encyclopedias not only provide background information on your topic but usually also have bibliographies which can lead you to more specialized materials.

Encyclopedia of religion

Publisher: Detroit : Macmillan Reference USA, 2005.

This encyclopedia covers all areas of religion. As it was published in 2005, the articles and their bibliographies are fairly current, though some of the bibliographies are not as up to date as others. The entry “Ecology and Religion” consists of fourteen articles.

Encyclopedia of religion and nature

Publisher: London ; Thoemmes Continuum, 2005.

This 1800 page work covers a wide range of topics. It does have an occasional weak entry. The bibliographies are usually good.

Good Starting Points:

The Oxford handbook of religion and ecology

Publisher: Oxford ; Oxford University Press, 2006.

The first half of this book has chapters on religious traditions, including three chapters on Christianity (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox). The second half of the book has chapters on approaches (ecofeminism) and information on religious environmental activism. The footnotes and bibliographies will lead you to related sources.

Religions of the World and Ecology
An important series that has individual volumes on major religious traditions.

Worldviews, religion, and the environment

Publisher: Australia ; Thomson/Wadsworth, c2003.

Excellent collection of articles on various religious traditions and contemporary perspectives (ecofeminism etc.). The bibliographies at the end of each section list the most important books on that topic, though not all bibliographies are up to date.

Religion and the new ecology

Publisher: Notre Dame : University of Notre Dame Press, c2006.

Chapter Four, “The Various Christian Ethics of Species Conservation,” lists ecological position statements by denominations, organizations, and individuals and categorizes them.

Environmental ethics

A collection of both mainstream and alternative essays.

Environmental philosophy

Collection of important essays. Has good introduction to Ecofeminism and Environmental Continental Philosophy. Also has interesting essay by Sturgeon on ecofeminism and indigenous women.

Ethics and the environment

International Society for Environmental Ethics Bibliography

Indexes a large number of books. While it indexes a fairly small number of journals, they are some of the most important journals in the area. A very useful feature is that most of the citations are annotated. Allows searching for keywords in citations and annotations.

National Religious Partnership for the Environment

The ‘Statements and Activities’ link on the left column provides a variety of types of information by a large number of religious groups. There are links at the top of the page to other groups including: Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Evangelical Environmental Network, National Council of Churches of Christ.

Web of Creation

“Links to Environmental Groups” provides access to both religious and non-religious environmental websites.

Forum on Religion and Ecology

This site created by the Forum on Religion and Ecology has a large number of official statements on religion and ecology by various religious organizations.

Bible.

The Green Bible has a list of denominational environmental programs and also of faith based environmental organizations starting on page 1243.

Evangelicals for Social Change

Headquartered in Wynnewood, only 20 minutes away. The “Creation Care” section includes editorials on various topics related to environmental issues and a “Featured Ministry” section with a link to a specific ecologically minded congregation.

Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation

Site includes the “Cornwall Declaration,” and “A Call to Truth, Prudence, and Protection of the Poor: An Evangelical Response to Global Warming,” as well as links to articles and press releases addressing issues in religious environmentalism.

European Christian Environmental Network

“Papers” section has list of documents produced by the European Christian Environmental Network. “Organisations” section has links to other groups, both religious and non-religious. “Working Groups” and “Topics” links provide documents and information about specific issues, such as climate change and environmental education. “Stories” has links to information about various Christian environmental projects.

Quaker Earthcare Witness

Has links to other Quaker and non-Quaker groups. “Publications” section includes pamphlets outlining organization’s views on various issues such as climate change, and the BeFriending Creation newsletter.
