Using Endnote Web: Economics & Public Policy Databases

Endnote Web is the new web-based application for managing references for research papers & other publications. It is available to Swarthmore students, faculty & staff both on or off campus. We currently are getting free ENW access because we have a subscription to Web of Science. ENW is designed with the undergraduate in mind. There is very good online help available on the Endnote Web Help Page.

• The first time you use Endnote Web, you will need to set up an account. YOU MUST CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT EITHER WHILE USING A CAMPUS COMPUTER OR IF YOU ARE OFF-CAMPUS, YOU MUST GO THROUGH THE PROXY SERVER! Go to https://myendnoteweb.com. At top of screen there is a ‘New to Endnote Web? Sign up for an account ‘ message. Fill out the brief User Registration form and you will be ready to use Endnote Web.

Note: For you to continue to get access to Endnote Web, you must log in via a campus computer (or through the proxy server) at least once in a six month period! Failure to do so will result in your Endnote Web account disappearing. If you are planning to leave the campus, your best bet would be to purchase a personal copy of Endnote, and import your saved citations to your own computer.

Instructions for Using ENW with Economics & Public Policy Databases:

Econlit

• Run search – select citations to save.
• Save to disk.
• Select Save File when you are asked what to do with the download.dat file.
• Open your Endnote Web account.
• Select Import under Collect References.
• Browse for the download.dat file and select it.
• Select EconLit (SP) under ‘type of file you want to import’.
• Click IMPORT. The references should then show up in the [unfiled] folder.

PAIS International (CSA) & Worldwide Political Science Abstracts (CSA)

• Mark the citations you want to save by selecting the box next to title.
• Select Save, Print, Email.
• Scroll down page. SAVE: Choose PC/Mac. (select one).
• A file named csaresults.txt is created. Save this to disk.
• If it isn’t open already, log in to your Endnote Web account.
• Under COLLECT Tab, select IMPORT REFERENCES.
• Locate the csaresults.txt file – type in the name or do a BROWSE on your computer.
• Select Database with PAIS International (CSA) under TYPE OF FILE.
• Click the import button and the records from the txtfile will come into your Endnote Web file.
• Your latest citations will show up in the UNFILED folder.

• Run your search.
• Mark the citations you want to save by selecting the box next to title.
• Select the Export article citations box.
• Select one option: Endnote.
• A file named downloadCitation is created. Save to disk.
• If it isn’t open already, log in to your Endnote Web account.
• Under COLLECT REFERENCES, select IMPORT.
• Locate the downloadCitation file – type in the name or do a BROWSE on your computer.
• Select Endnote Import filter.
• Click the import button and the records from the txtfile will come into your Endnote Web file. They will show up under [Unfiled].
• Select [Unfiled] and your records will show up. If you want to move them to a folder, select ALL and then select the file you want in the Move to … drop down menu.

Policy File (Chadwick Healey)

• Select the records you want to keep by checking the ADD TO MARKED LIST box below each citation.
• Select marked list. Select Select/Clear all records
• Select Download Selected records.
• Format compatible with ProCite, EndNote, Reference Manager and RefWorks. Download. • Save to disk. A file named citation.txt will be downloaded to the desktop.
• Go to Endnote Web. Under COLLECT REFERENCES, select IMPORT.
• Locate the citation.txt file – type in the name or do a BROWSE on your computer.
• Select Database with Refman RIS under TYPE OF FILE.
• Click the import button and the records from the txtfile will come into your Endnote Web file.

Web of Science

• Run your search.
• Select the records you want to send to ENW. If you want to send ALL of the records, scroll to the bottom of the screen & select All records on page under Output Records. If you have multiple pages of records, you will need to do this on every page - OR – you can specify the RANGE of records and be sure to include 1 to the last record in your search.
• Select how much of the citation you want to export: Author, Title, Source (with or without abstract) – or – Full Record (with or without CITED REFERENCES).
• Select the Save to EndNote Web. If you are not already logged in to ENW, you will be taken to a log in screen.
• You will then get a PROCESSING RECORDS screen which will record progress of records being exported to Endnote Web. At this point, you can go back to Web of Science to continue searching & sending more records to Endnote Web, or you can go directly to ENW by selecting the My Endnote Web tab at the top of this screen. (You may need to log again to your Endnote Web Account.)
• Select [Unfiled] and your records will show up. If you want to move them to a folder, select ALL and then select the file you want in the Move to … drop down menu.

Access World News

• Run search & select the citations you want to keep by clicking in the SAVE THIS ARTICLE box.
• Select the Save Articles folder in the left column and your saved citations will show up.
• Select articles: All , None , or select just the ones you want to export by clicking the box next to the citation. [Note: you MUST select an article to get any of the export features to work!]
• Select Bibliography (export)
• Save RIS document to disk.
• Return to Endnote Web. Under the COLLECT tab, select IMPORT REFERENCES.
• Hit BROWSE and locate your RIS file on the desktop. OPEN.
• Select Refman RIS as the filter. IMPORT.
• The articles will go into your UNFILED folder.
