There are several specialized encyclopedias & dictionaries in McCabe's Reference section. These sources are always a good place to get an overview of your topics are you are getting started. These are just a few examples of reference tools, both print & online:
AccessScience @ McGraw-Hill
The online version of Encyclopedia of Science & Technology which has good overview articles for all Science disciplines including Psychology & Psychiatry. Provides full-text access to articles, dictionary terms, biographies, research updates and links to related websites in all areas of science and technology. Covers 2000-present.
A dictionary of psychology
Online access to the 2nd edition (2006) of the Oxford Dictionary of Psychology.

Psychology books are mostly found in the BF section of the library (usually McCabe). Psychology books with a more MEDICAL slant to them may be found in the QP section of the library (both McCabe AND Cornell).

Provides abstracts of journals, books, book chapters, technical reports and dissertations. Areas covered include psychology and related disciplines, sociology, linguistics, education, medicine, law, physiology, business, psychiatry, and anthropology. Covers 1887-present.
Web of science
Provider: ISI
This multidisciplinary database can be searched by subject, author, and journal title. Articles that CITE a known author or work can also be searched. Cited reference searching helps identify more recent articles on the same topic. Coverage for the Social Sciences Citation Index in WofS goes back to 1956. Use this database if your thesis topic has a sociological slant.

Provides abstracts to journal articles and ERIC Digest records on all aspects of education. Many digest records are in full-text. Covers 1966-present.
GenderWatch
Offers full-text access to scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, books, conference proceedings, government and non-governmental organization reports. Materials focus on how gender impacts a broad spectrum of subject areas. Provides a historical perspective on the evolution of the women's movement and changes in gender roles. Covers 1970-present.

Includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. Includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

A searchable collection of journals, books, reference works, and conference materials in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Some materials are in full-text.
CogPrints
An electronic archive of papers related to the study of cognition, including such areas as psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, many areas of computer science, philosophy, biology, medicine, and anthropology.
JSTOR
Provides full-text and page images from many of the top journals in most academic disciplines. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years ago. There is a collection of Psychology journals in JSTOR.
PubMed central
Provides full-text access to life sciences journal literature. Sponsored by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Coverage dates vary by journal.

InterLibrary Loan & TriCollege Borrowing:
While Swarthmore has a really good libraries, obviously there will be times when we don't actually own something you've located in your research. That is when you'll need to borrow from other libraries and to do this you will need InterLibrary Loan (ILL).
Tri-College ILL - BOOKS: If you want a book from Bryn Mawr or Haverford, simply press the REQUEST button at the top of the Tripod screen. Enter your name & barcode, and select WHERE you want to pick up the book. Delivery takes approximately one day library to library.
TriCollege ILL - JOURNALS: If you need a journal article from Bryn Mawr & Haverford that exists in a PRINT journal, place a hold on the specific journal & request it be sent to you the same way you request a TriCo book. If the article exists in an electronic journal held only at Bryn Mawr or Haverford, complete the online article request form. The article will be sent to you via e-mail. If you need an article from a journal kept in one of the SCIENCE LIBRARIES, complete the online article request form for ALL of those requests, as science journals may not be checked out. If the article exists electronically, it will be sent to you via email. If the article exists only in print, it will be copied and sent via TriCo mail.
Non-TriCollege ILL - BOOKS: For books NOT available in Tripod, try E-Z Borrow and request books directly from nearby Pennsylvania & NJ libraries. Books usually arrive within a few days. If the book is not available via EZ Borrow, try regular InterLibrary Loan. (Use Worldcat to get complete BOOK information).
Non-TriCollege JOURNAL ARTICLES: For journal article requests, fill out the article request form on the InterLibrary Loan page. For complete journal titles, check the book behind the Circulation Desk, or go to Journal Abbreviation Sources.
