Finding Compositions in Complete Works Sets Using Grove
The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is a great source to help you navigate the large sets of complete works that exist for prolific composers like Beethoven or Schubert, but it can be tricky to use. Consider this screen shot from Beethoven's works list:

What does woo29 mean? And what is xxv/292? How do you find this out? Look at the beginning of a composer's works list in Grove, and you'll often find a list of editions and an explanation of the work list. WoO means Werk ohne Opuszahl, and the xxv/292 means that you can find the work in Volume 25 of the 19th century edition of Beethoven's Complete Works. And what does that mean to you? It means you have to go to Swarthmore, actually, since Haverford doesn't have the old set, just the newer one.
Below is an example of another page from Grove, this one with works that are in the new edition of Beethoven's works.
