Cite While You Write is Endnote's way of integrating citations from your Endnote collection directly into the text of your MS Word documents. With Cite While You Write, it's easy to generate a bibliography in your preferred citation style (MLA, Chicago, etc.), as well as to insert parenthetical citations, footnotes, or endnotes into your paper.
Cite While You Write is already installed on public Windows computers on campus. To install it on your computer, whether Windows or Mac, you'll need to download the proper installers. On any screen in Endnote Web, just scroll down and click on the "Download Installers" link. Once you've installed it, you'll be able to get to the Endnote Web tool bar in Word (or click on the Tools menu in Word and look for Endnote Web).
To Cite While You Write (PC)1) Open your Word document.
2) When you’re ready to insert a reference, place the cursor at the desired spot.
3) Use the tool bar or menu to search for and add the reference (see commands below), and format the bibliography.
Formatted vs. unformatted citationWhen you insert a citation into your Word document, Endnote embeds a code that uniquely identifies the citation from your library by last name of the first author, date and a reference ID corresponding to the reference number in your library.
{Baker, 1997, #278; Candlestickmaker, 2002, #18}
Endnote relies on these codes to form the bibliography. Don’t alter the codes or you will foul up the works. When you format the citation, the unformatted code is transformed to a formatted version, according to the style you have selected.
(Baker, 1997; Candlestickmaker, 2002) OR (10, 33)
Insert footnotes and endnotes (Chicago/Turabian styles)To insert footnotes or endnotes instead of parenthetical citations:
1) In Word, go to References (in Word 2007) or Insert→Footnote (or Insert→References→Footnote).
2) Select your note style and formatting.
3) Position your cursor in the notes section, then use the tool bar or menu to search for and add the reference.
