A history of Haverford College for the first sixty years of its existence
An Alumni Association committee worked for fifteen years to publish this detailed account of the College in the nineteenth century. The book includes sections on the student societies and the library and museum collections. There are also multiple print copies of this work in the Tri-Colleges.
The story of a small college
Isaac Sharpless published this history in 1918; half of the book is a first-hand account of his three decades as College President. His history is also available in print.
The spirit and the intellect
Greg Kannerstein (HC 1963) edited this most recent history of the College, published in 1983. Includes chapters on the Library (by David Fraser), Women at the College (Abigail Adams), Minorities at the College (Adolphus L. Williams, Jr. and Cynthia Farr Brown), and Intercollegiate Athletics (Robert Alan Katz and Kannerstein). Also available in print.

"Growing up Quaker" in the Civil War era

This essay explores the context of family life and a college founded by and for Quakers, Haverford College, as the conflict between the southern slave states and the northern non-slave states erupted in Civil War, spurring a "crisis" within the Society of Friends. A look at the lives of two bright young Haverford students from Quaker families, one of whom went on to fight in the war while the other did not, encourages us to look at influences beyond their common background, that shaped their attitudes about the war and other external events.

MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION 910: Includes letters, journals, notebooks, and other manuscript material relating to College life. Information about this collection is available partially through the college’s online catalog and partially through a card catalog located in Special Collections. See especially the Annals of Haverford College, written pseudonomously by students in 1834-1835.
Daniel B. Smith papers, 1834-1845.
Papers include his manuscript class lectures on the history of Christianity and geography and his manuscripts for books on geography, ethics and the history of the United States.
Abraham Lincoln and Haverford students
Lincoln travelled to Harrisburg stopping at the Haverford station where Haverford College students greeted him. He passed through Haverford on his return east, but for security reasons, his second journey was unannounced. Photocopies from three articles documenting these trips are included.
