HIST 325 : Topics in Social History: Sexuality in America (BMC)

Research Assignment:

Your research assignment is to produce a bibliography of primary and secondary source materials regarding one of these three topics:

Christine Jorgensen
Robert Mapplethorpe and the NEA controversy
The MacKinnon/Dworkin Minneapolis (draft) Ordinance

Primary sources might include:

newspaper and popular magazine accounts from the time of the controversy
memoirs written by the people involved
government documents such as Congressional hearings (transcripts) and court decisions (text of opinions)
images and documentary film

Secondary sources might include:

articles from scholarly journals
books by scholars regarding the people and events involved
articles in reference books and encyclopedias

Government Materials:

Provides daily updated information on the U.S. legislature, including full text of bills, laws, Congressional reports, and much more.

Congressional hearings and reports might be the most useful documents for this project. To search these, click Advanced Search under Congressional Publications, and be sure to alter the date range to cover the appropriate years.

Monthly catalog of United States government publications

The Monthly Catalog (also known as MoCat) provides citations to all materials published by the federal government, including Congressional reports, hearings, debates, and records; judiciary materials; and documents issued by departments in the Executive branch.

Use the subject index in the back of each volume to identify the items, then check the appropriate page to find the full citations.
