Finding Definitions & Background Information:
Sometimes you will need to look up words or get some basic information before you are able to fully understand the articles you are reading in scientific journals. Using this encyclopedia and dictionary can help to get your research started. Both electronic AND print resources are listed below. The print titles may be found in Cornell's REFERENCE section which is on the main floor of the library. These are just a FEW of the print titles available - we have LOTS of specialized engineering handbooks in the Reference section - be sure to BROWSE!

An interdisciplinary database which has much full-text. Always a good place to start. Covers 1971-present.
Web of science
Provider: ISI
This multidisciplinary database can be searched by subject, author, and journal title. Articles that CITE a known author or work can also be searched. Cited reference searching helps identify more recent articles on the same topic. Coverage for the Science Citation Index in WofS now goes back to 1900!
Engineering news.

This PRINT journal is a good source of PRIMARY historical engineering information. It started publishing in the 1870's (Swarthmore's holdings begin in 1877 with volume 4) and it combined with Engineering News Record in 1917. Old print volumes may be found on the lower level of Cornell, along the wall behind the compact shelving. Please be careful of these volumes as they are very old and fragile! There is a SUBJECT INDEX in the front of most volumes.
ScienceDirect
Provides full-text,online access to journal articles in the life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences. Full-text is available only for journals to which the TriColleges subscribe. Full-text access for most journals goes back to 1993. Abstracts are available for non-subscribed journals. We do not have full-text access to ALL the journal in Science Direct!
Google scholar
Google Scholar could be your best database bet for digging up old articles in Engineering journals. A recent study revealed that Google Scholar had a 90% matching rate with COMPENDEX for materials published after 1990. Since Compendex is THE Engineering Index, using Google Scholar, perhaps in conjunction with Web of Science for any pre-1990 publications, should get you the articles you need for any Engineering research. Click on the Find It @ Swarthmore link to get to articles in journals we subscribe to, or to the InterLibrary Loan form, if we don't. For BOOK citations, click on the Check TRIPOD link.

InterLibrary Loan & TriCollege Borrowing:
While Cornell Library has a really good collection, obviously there will be times when we don't actually own something you've located in your research. That is when you'll need to borrow from other libraries and to do this you will need Inter-Library Loan (ILL).
Tri-College ILL - BOOKS: If you want a book from Bryn Mawr or Haverford, simply press the REQUEST button at the top of the Tripod screen. Enter your name & barcode, and select WHERE you want to pick up the book. Delivery takes approximately one day library to library.
Non-TriCollege ILL - BOOKS: For books NOT available in Tripod, try E-Z Borrow and request books directly from nearby Pennsylvania & NJ libraries. Books usually arrive within a few days. If the book is not available via EZ Borrow, try regular InterLibrary Loan. (Use Worldcat to get complete BOOK information).
JOURNAL ARTICLES: For articles in journals not available from the main libraries in TriCo*, use the online ILL form. You must put the COMPLETE JOURNAL TITLE in your request - do not use abbreviations, or your request will most likely be sent back to you. For complete journal titles, check the book behind the Circulation Desk, or go to Journal Abbreviation Sources.
* Journals DO circulate from main libraries, so if you need an article from a non-science library journal, place a hold on the actual journal volume in Tripod and it will be sent via TriCo van!
* Your Swat ID will get you into Penn's libraries, but you cannot borrow directly from them. You must use ILL to get anything from Penn.
