Use Tripod to find books, journals (not articles), sound recordings, videos, etc. held at Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore College Libraries.

WorldCat

Provider: OCLC

A catalog of the holdings of books, journals, and other materials held by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) member libraries. Includes manuscripts, maps, films and sound recordings. Covers works published before 1,000 BC-present.

Finding Journal Articles and other scholarly materials:

EconLit

Provider: SilverPlatter

Provides abstracts to economic journals, books, book reviews, dissertations, and working papers. Topics include economic theory and history, monetary theory, labor economics, international, regional and urban economics. Coverage 1969-present.

Quick searches: your terms, connected with AND, searched in the subject fields
For more precise searching: use the Index to identify appropriate subject headings
You may combine search sets, and limit by language or material type.
Click FindIt! to see if we have access to the article through our online subscriptions or in print in the library. If we don't, you can order it through Interlibrary Loan.

Web of science

Provider: ISI

Provides access to the Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Search for scholarly articles in any discipline, or for articles that cite a known author or work. Coverage varies.

Search tips:

To look for articles, enter your keywords in the box.
To find articles that cite a known item, click Cited Ref Search.
Enter cited author’s name using last name, then first initial and an asterisk
(e.g., ceglowski j*). Enter year of cited article (e.g., 1989). Click Search.
Click in the checkboxes next to each match. Click Finish. The results list shows all of the more recent articles that cite the article of interest.

JSTOR

Provides full-text and page images from many of the top journals in most academic disciplines. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years ago.

Finding Newspaper Articles and News Transcripts:

LexisNexis academic

Provider: LN

Provides access to hundreds of newspapers and magazines -- foreign, domestic and local -- dating back to the 1980s and earlier. Also contains business and financial information (SEC filings, company profiles and financials, business news) and legal information (laws, regulations, full-text law review articles).

Search tips (for news articles):

Click Power Search

Enter your terms, using quotes to make phrases (e.g., "hedge funds") and an asterisk as a wildcard to represent different word endings (e.g., regulat* to stand for regulation, regulate, regulations)

Use the Select Sources dropdown to see if you want to limit to a certain type of source, or a specific source such as the New York Times

Note the date range and adjust as desired.

When you see the results list, you can sort by relevance, narrow the results by adding a term, drill down through the categories in the left-hand bar to see a subset.

You can also check the boxes next to specific items in order to print or email yourself selected articles as PDF or Word documents.

Finding Data and Statistics:

You may need to find numerical tables as well as raw data to support your arguments. There is a wide array of such information available from statistical agencies and other organizations, in print, CD-ROM, and online formats. The key is to think about which body would be most likely to collect the information of interest.

LexisNexis statistical

Includes the entire contents of American Statistics Index, and full text of documents including Industry Trade and Technology Review; U.S. Foreign Trade Highlights; Background Notes on the Countries of the World (State Dept.).

ICPSR data archive

Provider: ICPSR

This site provides access to thousands of datasets (and related documentation) on political and economic topics. Many datasets are survey and opinion poll results on many subjects; others are government studies such as the Census and Monthly Business Reports.

International financial statistics

Provider: IMF

IFS contains time series data for most IMF members (over 200 countries). The series include data on a country's exchange rates, international liquidity, money and banking accounts, interest rates, production, prices, international transactions, government accounts, and national accounts as well as commodity and trade statistics. IFS also contains area and world tables for selected series.

WDI online.

Contains development data covering more than 575 indicators, 225 countries,and 18 regional and income groups. An extensive collection of data that includes population, income, social, economic, financial, natural resources, and environmental indicators. Covers 1960-present.

Finding Stock Prices:

Yahoo! Finance

Provider: Yahoo

Links to a wide variety of financial news sources.

Finding Country Information:

CIA world fact book

Provides detailed profiles of all of the countries of the world. Offers information on each country's geography, people, government, economy, communications, military, and transnational issues, as well as maps and flag images. Covers 2000 - present in PDF; current interactive edition is continually updated.

OECD Economic Surveys

You can search Tripod by title: OECD Economic Surveys _________ (country name).

STAT-USA Internet

Provides the most recent international trade information available from the National Trade Data Bank, the National Economic, Social & Environmental Data Base and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Provides access to statistical publications that focus on economics and trade.

Internet Resources:

Broad metasite, with links to all types of economics resources freely available on the Internet. Includes a very complete listing of economics journals with Internet presence. Organized by topic.

Managing your citations:

There are several tools available for managing and tracking your citations to books, articles, websites, etc.. You can use these tools to maintain a database of citations with your research notes; you can also use them to create your in-text citations and list of sources cited.
