Papers of Gilbert and Minnie Pickett Bowles detail over 60 years of missionary and educational activities in Japan in the first half of the 20th century. Papers deal also with A.F.S.C. work in Hawaii and Philadelphia and L.A.R.A. (Licensed Agencies for Relief in Asia) activities in Korea, Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines, as well as the peace movement in Japan, China, Korea and Hawaii.Also: In #975C, journal letters of Gilbert Bowles to friends concerning mission work in Japan and Bowles' work in Hawaii during World War II. ca. 125 items.

Very similar to the above, but a much larger collection, including Cadbury's diaries written in the 1940s, but beginning with his childhood, his student days at Haverford and his work in China and another set, 1893-1958; Cadburys' letters, 1902-1959, personal, professional and political; Cadbury's manuscripts. As well there is correspondence (1920-27; 1937) and diaries (1932-67) of his second wife, Catharine Jones Cadbury and letters of his first wife, Sarah Manatt Cadbury, 1909-1911. There is also a collection of Chinese political posters.

Materials include records of the YMCA, active at Haverford from 1879 until 1928. It helped support a Haverford College missionary in China, Robert Simkin (1897-1958), class of 1903. Jones (ca. 1890-1967) was a Quaker missionary teaching Bible, English and sewing at Friends Girls School, Tokyo, and Press Superintendent of Japan Women’s Christian Temperance Union beginning in 1914. Her letters to the Mission Board in Philadelphia and others tell of her experiences in Japan, 1914-1917.

This Philadelphia based organization, founded in 1917 for Quakers to provide non-sectarian world service, provided relief and reconstruction in post war China and Japan as well as assisted relocated Japanese-Americans in the 1940s.
