I. Finding Background Information:
Brill's New Pauly
Publisher: Leiden : Brill, 2002-
Updated and translated version of the standard encyclopedia for Antiquity. Under the entry "Novel" there are three articles, "Greek," "Latin," and "Christian." They treat works, themes, and later reception. Each article ends with a bibliography listing books, essays, and journal articles for further reading. The encyclopedia is now published through the article "Sarpedon." For topics Sas... through Z see the German version of the encyclopedia, Paulys Real-Encyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft.
Encyclopedia of ancient Greece

Presents articles written by specialists in the field. Many specific topics treated. Again useful bibliographies at the ends of articles for further reading.

A venerable reference work that treats larger topics in a more expansive fashion than we would expect from a dictionary. Includes many short entries not seen in either Brill's Pauly or the Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece.

IV. Finding Criticism in Journals:
Journal articles and other periodical publications provide scholarly information on specific aspects of literary history and criticism. Since articles are generally published on a shorter schedule than books, they can be the first formulation of a scholar's thinking on an issue. The following indexes are the best ways for you to identify journal articles.
