I. Finding Background Information:
Brill's New Pauly
Publisher: Leiden : Brill, 2002-
Updated and translated version of the standard encyclopedia for Antiquity. Articles are extensive and often address the topic in general before analyzing the issues in Greece and in Rome. Bibliographies list books, essays, and journal articles for further reading. The encyclopedia is now published through the article "Sarpedon." For topics Sas... through Z see the German version of the encyclopedia, Paulys Real-Encyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft.

Latin literature

The Oxford classical dictionary

A venerable reference work that treats larger topics in a more expansive fashion than we would expect from a dictionary. Includes many short entries not seen in either Brill's Pauly or the Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece.

1) Loeb Classical Library
A series of Latin and Greek texts with facing page English translations. Now published by Harvard University Press but started in 1912 by the publisher William Heinemann. The critical apparatus is minimal at best and should be supplemented by a more scholarly edition. There are 352 records in Tripod.

2) Oxford Classical Texts - Search Scriptorum classicorum bibliotheca Oxoniensis A series of Ancient Greek and Latin texts with critical notes. In recent years introductions appear in English; earlier introductions were in Latin. There are 242 records in Tripod
3) Teubner Series - Search Bibliotheca scriptorum Graecorum et Romanorum Teubneriana Also a series of Ancient Greek and latin texts with critical notes. Teubner has been publishing longer than Oxford and has the greatest number of texts available in modern editions with extensive notes. There are 1208 records in Tripod.

2) Perseus Digital Library, Greek and Roman Materials
Greek and Latin texts, often with English translations, for many Classical authors.
3) TLG Online (Thesaurus Linguae Graecae)
Full text access to the ancient Greek corpus as well as Byzantine Greek writings. Searching is most effective using a Greek font. For the different options in downloading or configuring your computer, see Tips for Using the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae.

Searching by the English title of a work may miss some of the translations available.

WorldCat - An important place to look for many materials not owned by the Tri-College Libraries. This combined library catalog contains more than 62 million records describing items owned by libraries around the world. Many of these items are available to you though interlibrary loan.

V. Finding Criticism in Journals:
Journal articles and other periodical publications provide scholarly information on specific aspects of history and the history of science. Since articles are generally published on a shorter schedule than books, they can be more-up-to-date. The following indexes are the best ways for you to identify journal articles.
AnneĢe philologique
Offers bibliographic records of journal articles, conference proceedings and collection articles on many subject areas relating to Classical Studies including philosophy, history and the antiquities. Covers 1959-present.
Gnomon Online
This online index is maintained by the venerable German journal Gnomon. It allows you to search by title word, author, and journal name, as well as by subject terms established in the Thesaurus in both German and English.
Note that the citations listed represent only 15% percent of the total listings in the Gnomon Bibliographische Datenbank (which is not accessible in the three colleges).

TOCS-IN
Provides the tables of contents from a selection of Classics,Near Eastern Studies, and Religion journals. Subjects covered include: Greek and Latin linguistics and literature, Greek and Roman history, archaeology, mythology,and the Ancient Near East. About ten percent of the entries link to the full text of the articles. Covers published works from 1992-present.

Catalogue of the German Archaeological Institute
Zenon, the catalogue of the Deutsches Archaologisches Institut. Much of the same information as DYABOLA below, only through a free interface.
Included in this catalog are not only books held by the libraries, but a full index to the journals and collected volumes. You can also search by the DYABOLA subject headings (the "Systematic Access to the DAI Bibliographies (Thesaurus)" link).

DYABOLA
Contains several databases, the largest of which is the Archäologische Bibliographie, or "Realkatalog des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts Rom," the most comprehensive database for classical archaeology. Note: This catalog is also available free of charge; see the entry below for the URL. The database goes back to 1956, and succeeds the print Archaologische Bibliographie, which started in 1932 (Carpenter Periodicals DE 2 .D5).

A digital library that provides access to thousands of digital images derived from a variety of museum, library and archival collections. Images support a variety of disciplines including architecture, painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. First time users need to register for a password.
Oxford art online
Includes full-text articles on every aspect of the visual arts from prehistory onward. Contains images, links to related sites, and bibliographies of sources for further reading. Coverage of the Classical era is extensive. For example, there are 75 biographical articles on Greek vase painters.
Parthenon Freize
This reconstruction of the sculptures on the Parthenon has been done by Columbia University. Effort has been made to indicate the narrative flow on each side of the temple.
Pottery Database
The Beazley Archive at the University of Oxford maintains this extensive database (over 130, 000 images) on ancient Greek vases. It is searchable by theme, type of vase, inscription, painter, technique (i. e. white ground), and collection.
The Beazley Archive's Classical Art Research Centre has many other resources included the digitized Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum and a merged database that draws on 22 separate files including the Pottery Database.
