finding books:

Use Tripod to locate books at the Tri-College Libraries.

                                            1. Start with a KEYWORD search.
                                            2. Look at relevant items.
                                            3. Note the subject headings assigned to those items.
                                            4. Finally, search by those subject headings.

Once you identify books you would like to check out, write down the book title, location, and call number of the book. Then use the call number to find the book in McCabe Library.

A-G call numbers are on the lower level of the library
H-K call numbers are on the second floor of the library.
L-Z call numbers are on the third floor of the library.

Request items located at Bryn Mawr or Haverford using the REQUEST button. These are usually delivered within 24 hours.

If all copies of a book in Tripod are checked out, use E-Z Borrow to request the book from a partner library. These books are delivered in 2-7 days.

deciphering the library of congress classification system:

Believe it or not, those letters at the beginning of call numbers actually mean something! Letters stand for general bodies of knowledge, called “classes”. Each class is further subdivided into more specific categories.

A – General Works
B – Philosophy, Psychology, Religion

BL - comparative mythology

C – Auxiliary Sciences of History
D – History of Africa, Asia, Europe & Oceania
E – History: America
F – History: America
G – Geography, Anthropology
H – Social Sciences
J – Political Science
K – Law

Use WorldCat to locate relevant books not owned by the Tri-College Libraries. Request items found in WorldCat through EZBorrow or ILL.

WorldCat contains over 41 million records of many types of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries. RedLightGreen contains over 130 million records from Research Libraries Group member libraries.

EZ-Borrow
EZ-Borrow lets you search the library catalogs of more than 35 Pennsylvania academic libraries and directly request items not owned by the Tri-College Libraries, and items that are currently checked out of the Tri-College Libraries. Use the barcode on the back of your student ID to login to EZ-Borrow. Most EZ-Borrow items circulate for 28 days. Requests for books normally take 2-10 days to fill.

To request books not owned by the Tri-College Libraries and not in EZ-Borrow, use interlibrary loan (ILL). The form is on the EZ-Borrow/ILL page. Requests for books normally take 1-2 weeks to fill.

Provides full-text and page images from many of the top journals in most academic disciplines. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years ago.

Année philologique

Offers bibliographic records of journal articles, conference proceedings and collection articles on many subject areas relating to Classical Studies including philosophy, history and the antiquities. Covers 1959-present.

TLG Online.

Full text database of primary sources covering Greek literature from Homer (Eighth Century B.C.) to the fall of Byzantium in AD 1453.

Art index

Provider: Wilson

Offers abstracts of journals, museum bulletins and yearbooks in the fields of art, architecture, decorative arts and photography. Covers abstracts from 1929-present, full-text articles 1997-present.

MLA international bibliography

Provider: ProQuest

Provides citations to journal articles, books, working papers, conference proceedings, bibliographies, and other materials. Areas covered include literature, language, linguistics, film, theatre and folklore. Covers 1926-present.

Web of science

Provider: ISI

Provides access to the Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Search for scholarly articles in any discipline, or for articles that cite a known author or work. Coverage varies.

Periodicals index online (Chadwyck)

Index to journal articles in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, including some published as far back as 1770. Includes periodicals in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and other Western languages.

Project Muse

Provides access to journals published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. Disciplines covered are humanities, social sciences, and mathematics.

getting the articles you've found:

In Art Index, and indeed most databases, there is a FIND IT icon next to each citation. Click on it to find out if the article is available in full-text online from the campus where you are doing your research, to search Tripod for the journal in print, or to request the item through interlibrary loan. If FIND IT does not appear in your database, use Tripod to search for the journal title in your citation.

If the journal is in print or online at one of the other two schools, you can request that the journal or article be sent to you. If a journal in not in Tripod, you can request the article using ILL. In both cases, follow the directions on the EZ-Borrow/ILL page

getting background information:

A Dictionary of Greek and Roman biography and mythology.
