The Cambridge history of Africa

The Cambridge History of Africa contains longer, more scholarly coverage of topics in African history. It is available at Haverford, but not at Bryn Mawr.
Online Book Collections:
Internet Archive
The Internet Archive is a non-profit organization that is building an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. The Internet Archive includes more than 300,000 texts, as well as audio, moving images, software and archived web pages. A good source for books printed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including many travel accounts.
Google Books
Online library of more than a million books digitized from the collections of Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, and many other university libraries. The complete texts are available for books in the public domain - principally books printed before 1923. A potential source of published travel accounts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

JSTOR
Provides full-text and page images from many of the top journals in most academic disciplines. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years ago.
ProQuest Research Library

Provides citations and full-text magazine and journal articles in a wide variety of disciplines, both scholarly and popular in scope. Covers 1971-present.
19th century masterfile
Provider: Paratext
Offers millions of citations to periodicals, newspapers, books, patents and government documents published prior to 1925. Coverage includes British periodicals and British Parliamentary papers.
Periodicals index online (Chadwyck)
Index to journal articles in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, including some published as far back as 1770. Includes periodicals in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and other Western languages.

University of Pennsylvania Library:
The Penn Library’s African Collection Page provides links to the extensive Africana resources at Penn. Penn is particularly strong in research collections on microform, including British colonial reports and missionary records. Trico students may use the Penn Library, but may not check out books or use online resources. Penn's African Studies Center also maintain a website with links to a wide range of useful resources.
Bryn Mawr's Special Collections:
Bryn Mawr has an extensive collection of works on Africa from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, including memoirs, travel accounts, colonial guides, government reports, magazines, and brochures Overviews of our holdings and guides to particular collections can be found on the Special Collections web site: http://www.brynmawr.edu/library/speccoll/index.shtml
The book collections are included in Tripod. It is possible to limit your search to just the Special Collections holdings by choosing “Bryn Mawr Special Collections” from the Tripod menu box that normally reads “View Entire Collection.”
Hours: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday – Friday, open until 9:00 pm on Wednesdays. An appointment is a good idea for your initial visit to talk about resources for your project.
