ProQuest Research Library

Provider: ProQuest

An interdisciplinary database which has much full-text. Always a good place to start. Covers 1971-present.

Biological sciences

Offers abstracts and citations to a wide range of materials including journal articles, books, conference proceedings, technical reports and patents. Fields covered include biomedicine, biotechnology, zoology, ecology, and much more. Covers 1982-present.

Web of science

Provider: ISI

This multidisciplinary database can be searched by subject, author, and journal title. Articles that CITE a known author or work can also be searched. Cited reference searching helps identify more recent articles on the same topic. Coverage for the Science Citation Index in WofS now goes back to 1900!

Google scholar

Google provides a pretty good database for searching for scholarly literature. Use this IN ADDITION to library-provided databases, as there is a lot that is NOT included in Google Scholar. But - it also often digs up good stuff that the other databases don't! Use the "Check Tripod" and "Find it @ Swarthmore" links to see if we have access to full text.

Relemed

Pubmed with RELEVANCY ranking! So it's just like searching pubmed, but the articles most relevant to you search are listed first. (If you use this database, please be aware that it is an advanced MEDICAL database, and you will be unable to get immediate access to most of the journals indexed here!)

Electronic Journal Collections:

BioOne

Provides full-text access to research journal articles in such fields as the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. Covers 2000-present. (Note: We do NOT have access to the BioOne2 collection of journals!)

JSTOR

Provides full-text and page images from many of the top journals in most academic disciplines, including lots of Biology journals. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years ago. Includes Science, PNAS & many other science journals.

PubMed central

Provides full-text access to life sciences journal literature, if it is an Open Access journal or if we have a subscription to it! Sponsored by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Coverage dates vary by journal.

Produced by the National Library of Medicine, Genetics Home Reference provides consumer-friendly information about the effects of genetic variations on human health.

Citation & Research Information:

A short guide to writing about biology

There is a copy of the 2007 edition of this guide behind Cornell's Circulation Desk on reserve which must be used in the library. You should use this guide for examples on how to cite sources and for other information like taking notes, avoiding plagiarism, writing lab reports, and much more.

InterLibrary Loan & TriCollege Borrowing:

While Cornell Library has a really good collection, obviously there will be times when we don't actually own something you've located in your research. That is when you'll need to borrow from other libraries and to do this you will need Inter-Library Loan (ILL). (For this course, you should be able to get everything you need from within the TriCo Library network.)

Tri-College ILL - BOOKS: If you want a book from Bryn Mawr or Haverford, simply press the REQUEST button at the top of the Tripod screen. Enter your name & barcode, and select WHERE you want to pick up the book. Delivery takes approximately one day library to library.

Non-TriCollege ILL - BOOKS: For books NOT available in Tripod, try E-Z Borrow and request books directly from nearby Pennsylvania & NJ libraries. Books usually arrive within a few days.

JOURNAL ARTICLES: For articles in journals not available from the main libraries in TriCo*, use the online ILL form. You must put the COMPLETE JOURNAL TITLE in your request - do not use abbreviations, or your request will most likely be sent back to you. For complete journal titles, check the book behind the Circulation Desk, or go to Journal Abbreviation Sources.

* Journals DO circulate from main libraries, so if you need an article from a non-science library journal, place a hold on the actual journal volume in Tripod and it will be sent via TriCo van!
