Finding Articles:

Look for the

button and click on it to see if you can get online access to the citation's article. If Swarthmore does not have access to the online article, you will be given the option to check Tripod for print access, or it will populate an InterLibrary Loan request form for you.

If you are planning to do any research off-campus, you will need to log in to EZ-PROXY, which is Swarthmore's proxy server. Once you have logged in through the proxy server, your access to IP-linked resources will be allowed.

ProQuest Research Library

Provider: ProQuest

An interdisciplinary database which has much full-text. Always a good place to start. Covers 1971-present.

Web of Science

This multidisciplinary database can be searched by subject, author, and journal title. Articles that CITE a known author or work can also be searched. Cited reference searching helps identify more recent articles on the same topic. Coverage for the Science Citation Index in WofS now goes back to 1900! Includes access to Medline (Pubmed).

PubMed

Provider: NCBI

Includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. Includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

Google scholar

Google Scholar often digs up good resources that the other databases don't. So it is a good database to use in addition to the others. Use the "Check Tripod" and "Find it @ Swarthmore" links to see if we have access to full text.

Advances in Cancer Research

Online coverage back to 2003.

BioMed Central

Provides free access to biomedical research publications including biology, medicine journal articles, current reports, and meeting abstracts. Offers information about current controlled trials, as well as topics in modern biology. Coverage varies.

BioOne

Provides full-text access to research journal articles in such fields as the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. Covers 2000-present.

Highwire press

The largest archive of free full-text science on Earth (but there are also some SUBSCRIPTION based journals in this collection that you will not have access to unless Swarthmore PAYS for a subscription to them!).

JSTOR

Provides full-text and page images from many of the top journals in most academic disciplines. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years ago.

The titles listed below are either ONLINE or can be found in the REFERENCE SECTION on the first floor of Cornell Library. Be sure to browse the shelves when looking for these titles, as there are other books in this section which may be useful for your research.

A short guide to writing about biology

There is a copy of this guide behind Cornell's Circulation Desk on reserve which must be used in the library. You should use this guide for examples on how to cite sources and for other information like taking notes, avoiding plagiarism, writing lab reports, and much more.

InterLibrary Loan & TriCollege Borrowing:

While Cornell Library has a really good collection, obviously there will be times when we don't actually own something you've located in your research. That is when you'll need to borrow from other libraries and to do this you will need Inter-Library Loan (ILL).

Tri-College ILL - BOOKS: If you want a book from Bryn Mawr or Haverford, simply press the REQUEST button at the top of the Tripod screen. Enter your name & barcode, and select WHERE you want to pick up the book. Delivery takes approximately one day library to library.

Non-TriCollege ILL - BOOKS: For books NOT available in Tripod, try E-Z Borrow and request books directly from nearby Pennsylvania & NJ libraries. Books usually arrive within a few days.

JOURNAL ARTICLES: For articles in journals not available from the main libraries in TriCo*, use the online ILL form. You must put the COMPLETE JOURNAL TITLE in your request - do not use abbreviations, or your request will most likely be sent back to you. For complete journal titles, check the book behind the Circulation Desk, or go to Journal Abbreviation Sources.

Journals DO circulate from main libraries, so if you need an article from a non-science library journal, place a hold on the actual journal volume in Tripod and it will be sent via TriCo van!

PubMed central

Provides full-text access to life sciences journal literature. Sponsored by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Coverage dates vary by journal.
