Web of Science
This multidisciplinary database can be searched by subject, author, and journal title. Articles that CITE a known author or work can also be searched. Cited reference searching helps identify more recent articles on the same topic. Coverage for the Science Citation Index in WofS now goes back to 1900!

Includes over 15 million citations from MEDLINE and additional life science journalsfor biomedical articles back to the 1950's. Includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
Biological sciences
A section of Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Can narrow your search by selecting specific databases within this subject area.For this class you might select Microbiology Abstracts A, B & C. Covers 1982-present.
Google Scholar
Google provides a pretty good database for searching for scholarly literature. Use this IN ADDITION to library-provided databases listed here, as there is a lot that is NOT included in Google Scholar. But - it also often digs up good stuff that the other databases don't! Use the "Check Tripod" and "Find it @ Swarthmore" links to see if we have access to full text.

Provides free access to biomedical research publications including biology, medicine journal articles, current reports, and meeting abstracts. Offers information about current controlled trials, as well as topics in modern biology. Coverage varies.

Provides full-text access to research journal articles in such fields as the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. Covers 2000-present.

The largest archive of free full-text science on Earth! As of 1/25/07, we are assisting in the online publication of 1,581,093 free full-text articles and 4,108,345 total articles. There are 15 sites with free trial periods, and 35 completely free sites. 234 sites have free back issues, and 926 sites have pay per view!
JSTOR
Provides full-text and page images from many of the top journals in most academic disciplines. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years ago. Includes Science, PNAS & many other science journals.

There is copy of the latest edition of this guide behind Cornell's Circulation Desk on reserve which must be used in the library. You should use this guide for examples on how to cite sources and for other information like taking notes, avoiding plagiarism, writing lab reports, and much more.
InterLibrary Loan & TriCollege Borrowing:
While Cornell Library has a really good collection, obviously there will be times when we don't actually own something you've located in your research. That is when you'll need to borrow from other libraries and to do this you will need Inter-Library Loan (ILL).
Tri-College ILL - BOOKS: If you want a book from Bryn Mawr or Haverford, simply press the REQUEST button at the top of the Tripod screen. Enter your name & barcode, and select WHERE you want to pick up the book. Delivery takes approximately one day library to library.
Non-TriCollege ILL - BOOKS: For books NOT available in Tripod, try E-Z Borrow and request books directly from nearby Pennsylvania & NJ libraries. Books usually arrive within a few days. If the book is not available via EZ Borrow, try regular InterLibrary Loan. (Use Worldcat to get complete BOOK information).
JOURNAL ARTICLES: For articles in journals not available from the main libraries in TriCo*, use the online ILL form. You must put the COMPLETE JOURNAL TITLE in your request - do not use abbreviations, or your request will most likely be sent back to you. For complete journal titles, check the book behind the Circulation Desk, or go to Journal Abbreviation Sources.
* Journals DO circulate from main libraries, so if you need an article from a non-science library journal, place a hold on the actual journal volume in Tripod and it will be sent via TriCo van!
* Your Swat ID will get you into Penn's libraries, but you cannot borrow directly from them. You must use ILL to get anything from Penn.
