ProQuest Research Library
Provider: ProQuest
ProQuest provides citations and full-text magazine and journal articles in a wide variety of disciplines, both scholarly and popular in scope. You can limit your search to include only scholarly articles if necessary. Its wide coverage of different academic disciplines makes it a good starting point if your topic involves several different fields.
Web of knowledge
A large cross-disciplinary citation database, which lets you search for articles by topic and also shows you what other articles cite any given article you find. This can be an extremely useful tool if you've already found one good source and need to find other sources related to it.
Finding articles (general history)
If you want to find out more about the historical background of your topic, these two databases are a good place to start. America History and Life covers American history; Historical Abstracts covers the history of regions outside America.

Provides abstracts of journals, reviews and dissertations on United States and Canadian history from prehistory to the present. Covers 1954-present.
Historical abstracts

Provides abstracts of journal articles, books, book reviews and dissertations that cover world history from 1450 to the present (excluding the U.S. and Canada which are covered in "America: History and Life"). Includes publications from 1953-present.

A digital library that provides access to thousands of digital images derived from a variety of museum, library and archival collections. Images support a variety of disciplines including architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design. Coverage varies.
American Memory
A huge collection of digitized primary-source materials from the Library of Congress, including many photographic images. Covers many areas of American history. Go to "More Browse Options" to get to the main page for the Photographs and Prints collection, or do a keyword search including the word "photographs."
