Finding Background Information:

The following sources provide overviews of topics in anthropology, art history, ceramics, food, and social history. The articles are written by well-known academic researchers. When using an article in an encyclopedia or handbook, always check the bibliography at the end of the piece for further reading. It will provide a selective list of the books, articles, and, sometimes, Web resources considered to be the most up-to-date and reliable. This makes a good start for your research. It can also serve as a corrective later on because it usually provides a broader perspective than the in-depth books and journal articles you will find on your specific paper topic.

Looking for In-depth Information in Books:

Use the Tripod Catalog to look for relevant books owned by Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore.

WorldCat - An important place to look for many materials not owned by the Tri-College Libraries. This combined library catalog contains more than 62 million records describing items owned by libraries around the world. Many of these items are available to you though interlibrary loan.

Interlibrary Loan and E-ZBorrow - Request items that are not available in Tripod on this page. Note that PALCI E-Z Borrow provides books in 3 to 5 days. For books not in E-Z Borrow, request though Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Again materials may arrive in as little as 3 days. For journal articles not in Tripod, request through Article Delivery. Most are delivered to you electronically.

Searching for Journal Articles:

Journal articles and other periodical publications provide scholarly information on specific aspects of anthropology, history, and the social sciences more generally. Since articles are generally published on a shorter schedule than books, they can be more-up-to-date. The following indexes are the best ways to identify useful journal articles.

America, history and life

Provider: EBSCO

Provides abstracts of journals, reviews and dissertations on United States and Canadian history from prehistory to the present. Covers 1954-present.

Anthropology plus

Provides abstracts on journal articles, reports, and commentaries in many fields including social and cultural anthropology as well as ethnology and interdisciplinary studies. Covers the late 19th century to the present.

Bibliography of Asian studies

Provides citations to journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, anthologies, and Festshriften on all subjects pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia. Covers 1971-present. Complete citations end with the 1991 records. Since 1992, newly published books are no longer being added.

The New York times on the Web

Offers full-page-images and article images from the New York Times from its first issue in 1851 to three years before the current date. The collection includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue, cover to cover, in downloadable image files. A good source for advertisements.
