Searching for books or journals in print:

Tripod library catalog

Search Tripod for books, journals, videos, online resources, and other items in the Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore libraries. Use the request option to ask for items from Haverford or Swarthmore. Delivery is usually within one or two days.

To find items on your topic, try a keyword search:

WorldCat

This combined library catalog is a good resource for identifying materials not owned by the Tri-College Libraries. The database contains over 95 million records describing items owned by libraries around the world. If you have found a useful item in the Tri-College collections, try searching the author or subject headings of that item in WorldCat. Many of the items you find will be available to you though interlibrary loan.

MedlinePlus

Carefully selected resources on health topics from the National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, and other government agencies and health-related organizations. In addition to links to Web resources, MedlinePlus provides extensive information on drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, and the latest health news. You can search the database or browse by topic or demographic group.

Merck Manuals

Online versions of the seven Merck Manuals and the Merck Index, standard sources for medical information. A print version of the Merck Manual of Medical Information, Second Home Edition is also available in the Canaday Reference Area at RC 81 M535 2003.

The entries in ths ten volume encyclopedia are by anthropologists with research experience in the culture described and provide demographic, historical, social, economic, political, medical, and religious information, along with a basic bibliography.

CIA world fact book

The Central Intelligence Agency's World Factbook is a good source for quick background information on the countries of the world. The Factbook is now issued only in an online version, but the 1986-2004 print editions are available at B Canaday G122 fU56.

WDI online.

The World Bank's World Development Indicators (WDI) contains data covering 225 countries and 18 regional and income groups. An extensive collection of data includes mortality, literacy, health, and other indicators. Covers 1960-present.

World Health Organization

The World Health Organization is the agency that directs and coordinates health activities within the United Nations system. The WHO website has sections for countries, health topics, and statistics.

Searching for scholarly journal articles:

ProQuest Research Library

Provider: ProQuest

Provides citations and full-text articles from thousands of magazines and journals in a wide variety of disciplines, both scholarly and popular. Covers 1971-present.

Anthropology plus

Anthropology Plus combines Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and Anthropological Index from the Royal Anthropological Institute. It contains citations to journal articles, reports, and edited works in the fields of social, cultural, physical, biological, and linguistic anthropology, ethnology, and more. Coverage is from the 19th century to the present.

AnthroSource

Provides full text articles from American Anthropological Association journals, newsletters, and bulletins. Covers 1888-present.

JSTOR

Provides searchable full-text and page images from hundreds of the top journals in most academic disciplines. Coverage is from the inception of the journal up to the past three to five years.

PsycINFO

Provider: CSA

Provides access to the international literature in psychology and related disciplines, including anthropology, law, medicine, pharmacology, psychiatry, and social work. Covers 1887-present. A companion database, PsycCRITIQUES, provides access to book reviews in psychology (2004-present) while another, PsycARTICLES, provides full-text articles from American Psychological Association journals (1894-present).

PubMed

Provider: NCBI

PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, contains over 18 million citations to articles in more than 5000 biomedical journals. You can search by keyword and/or the NLM's MeSH subject headings. The Advanced Search mode allows easy limiting by article type, core journal subject groups, full-text availability and more. Covers 1948-present.

ReleMed

ReleMed (for Relevant Medicine) is a search engine developed by researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine that allows simplified searching of the PubMed database. ReleMed records contain links to the PubMed record and to any article providers.

Provides access to the Social Sciences Citation Index (1956-present) and the Science Citation Index (1955-present). Search by Author and/or Topic for scholarly articles in social science and scientific disciplines including anthropology, public health, sociology, women's studies, and medicine. You can also do a Cited Reference search to find articles that cite a known author or work to discover more recent articles on the same topic.

Provider: LN

Provides full-text documents from thousands of English and non-English language news, business, and legal publications. You can search across broad or narrow publication and subject categories, or focus on specific geographic areas or publications. Includes New York Times indexing (1969-1980) and full-text (1980-present). Coverage of other publications varies by title.

Access world news

Provider: NewsBank

Provides full-text documents from hundreds of U.S. and international newspapers, including the Philadelphia Inquirer (1981-present) and the Philadelphia Daily News (1978-present). You can search specific publications or groups of publications by geographic area. Coverage varies by title.

Ethnic newswatch

This interdisciplinary database contains full text from over 300 U.S. ethnic, minority and native newspapers, magazines and journals. Covers 1990-present.

Managing your citations:

There are several tools available for managing and tracking your citations to books, articles, websites, etc.. You can use these tools to maintain a database of citations with your research notes; you can also use them to create your in-text citations and list of sources cited.
