The following sources provide overviews of issues and topics in anthropology and the social sciences written by researchers in those academic fields.  When using an article in an encyclopedia or handbook, always check the bibliography at the end of the article for further reading.  It will provide a selective list of the books, articles, and, sometimes, Web resources considered to be the most up-to-date and reliable. This makes a good start for your research.  It can also serve as a corrective later on because it usually provides a broader perspective than the in-depth books and journal articles you will find on your specific paper topic.

Like the other encyclopedia published by Routledge (Companion Encyclopedia of Anthropology), there is an emphasis on theory in both the articles and the sources listed for further reading.  The Companion addresses broad topics in long essay format rather than the usual shorter entries found in encyclopedias.

Features articles on specific groups of peoples.  For example, there are 11 articles on gypsies in various European countries.  See Volume 4 for Europe and Volume 9 for Africa and the Middle East.

A very large and totally new synthesis of social science thought.  Especially good for the varied focuses that it gives each topic.  Much attention given to theorists.

Tripod - For locating books, journals, and other materials held in the Tri-College libraries. Deliveries within the Trico usually arrive in one or two days. Use the "Request" button. You can mark and then email or print records for multiple items.

WorldCat - An important place to look for many materials not owned by the Tri-College Libraries. This combined library catalog contains more than 62 million records describing items owned by libraries around the world. Many of these items are available to you though interlibrary loan.

Interlibrary Loan and E-ZBorrow - Request items that are not available in Tripod on this page. Note that PALCI E-Z Borrow provides books in 3 to 5 days.  For books not in E-Z Borrow, request though Interlibrary Loan (ILL).  Again materials may arrive in as little as 3 days.   For journal articles not in Tripod, request through Article Delivery.  Most are delivered to you electronically.

Bibliographies for Finding Specialized Articles and Books

For the Mediterranean area, you can quickly find relevant English-language books, journal articles, and essays in collections by checking the bibliographies listed below.  Most include brief summary descriptions, so that you can make informed decisions abbout the titles that you really need.

Journal articles and other periodical publications provide scholarly information on specific aspects of anthropology and the social sciences.  Since articles are generally published on a shorter schedule than books, they can be more-up-to-date.  The following indexes are the best ways to identify journal articles.
